Never tried it but thanks for a great post which has made me consider trying it. :)

This is an impressively detailed post. I'll have to give Netvibes a try this week. Do you know if content is sourced through netvibes or loaded directly from the original location? I ask because Google Reader (and iGoogle) are both good about keeping content fast and more reliable than their home sites.

    Daniel,

Thanks for the comment. I don't actually know. Is there a way I would be able to find out? At times it's very slow, that could be mean it's sourced through. Let me see what I can find out.

Great informative post Mike. I think you have convinced me to give Netvibes a try.

Another great way I've been using this service is integrating Yahoo Pipes in Netvibes. So, for instance, instead of creating a simple feed from say, just Google Blog Search, I create a pipe that integrates search results from Google + Twingly + Technorati + Icerocket blog searches. See the exponential increase in value?

    Karthik,

I mentioned the Social Media Firehouse pipe in the post just for that reason. I agree, pipes is definitely the way to go. It avoids the duplication issues. It's probably the best mechanism for an accurate filter. I think once people learn how to use it they will see the value in it. Thanks for the comment.

Mike, we've been using Netvibes as a monitoring post for several months now. You can check out our page at www.netvibes.com/samepoint to see what is being said about Samepoint. BTW, each feed is powered by www.samepoint.com.

    rkrueger,

That's an excellent dashboard example. I have heard some positive mentions about samepoint. I will be sure to check the site out. I'm glad to see you offer RSS. When I update this blog post, I will add it to the list.

Hi Mike -- This is a great tutorial! Always cool to see people posting more hands-on info than just more lists. :)

One of our user community alerted me to the post. Have you played with PostRank as one of your filtering tools at all?

In addition to being able to filter by audience engagement levels, folks can also filter by specific topics, and create aggregated feed channels for topics of interest for monitoring. (More info on that here.)

In any case, I love seeing the tools that people are using who have specific (and professional) needs. The combinations and gaps give us a lot of information on what people really need (and thus what we should be building). :)

    Melanie,

I appreciate the comment, thank you. I'll be honest, I checked out PostRank when it initially launched but have not used it since. I will gladly take a more in-depth look at it though. I just noticed you offer RSS as well. I will add it to the post when I update it.Thanks :)

I use Netvibes for my clients set up and make the most of the tools you have described. I can attest to it's effectiveness and relevancy to monitoring brands.

    Thanks for the post.

Mike, I was quite impressed with Netvibes a few years ago. But as a daily feed reader I went for Google Reader, and suddenly had forgotten all about Netvibes.
Now after reading your post I have been sitting fiddling around Netvibes all day, and must say its quite cool... like finding an old friend... oh, and great tips on the monitoring part... I have a monitor folder in Greader, but rarely get around to do it... Think the overview of Netvibes is better for just skimming.
  • Peter Efland · 10 months ago
Lol, since I wrote the above comment, I pretty much haven't been off of Netvibes... don't know if thats a good thing
  • mfruchter · 10 months ago
    Peter,

Thanks for the comment. I see that I got you hooked on it :) It's a great alternative monitoring station. You can get the same results with a little manual work as I detailed in this post, as some of the paid solutions offer. That's the beauty of Netvibes, RSS and widgets the possibilities are endless.

That's a really awesome dashboard. It would be even better if you can get to customize it.

A good dashboard alternative, but what makes it even better than the competition is that its for free!
